Witnist Privacy Policy

Witnist is a location-anchored photo app operated by Point Ginkgo ("we", "us").
Every post is captured with the in-app camera and pinned to the place it was taken.
This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. Questions:

What we collect
- Account information. Email address, username, display name, and
date of birth (used once to confirm you are 18 or older). Passwords are stored
only as salted hashes.
- Content you create. Photos captured with the in-app camera,
captions, and posts, along with when they were captured.
- Precise location. Witnist records your device's GPS location at
the moment you capture a photo — pinning content to a real place is the core of
the app. Location is stored as explicit data fields on your content. Photo files
themselves are re-encoded before upload, which strips embedded metadata
(including EXIF GPS) from the image bytes.
- Crash and diagnostic data. If the app crashes, a crash report is
sent to our crash-reporting provider (Sentry). We configure these reports to
exclude your email, username, and IP address; they reference at most an internal
account identifier.
- Device push tokens. If you enable notifications, we store the
device token needed to deliver them.
We do not run advertising or third-party analytics trackers, and we do not sell
personal data.
How we use it
- To operate the service: showing your posts on the map and in feeds according to
the visibility you choose, connecting you with people you follow.
- To enforce authenticity: verifying content came from the in-app camera.
- To keep the community safe: reviewing reports, moderating content, and enforcing
our Terms of Service and community guidelines.
- To fix problems: diagnosing crashes and errors.
What other users see
Your profile (username, display name, photo) is visible to other users. Your posts —
including their pinned location and capture time — are visible according to the
audience you choose for each post (for example public, followers, or friends). Think
about what a location reveals before posting: a public post shows where you were.
Who we share it with
- Service providers that host the service on our behalf:
DigitalOcean (servers, database, and media storage/delivery) and Sentry
(crash reporting). They process data only to provide those services.
- Legal requirements. We may disclose information if required by
law or to protect the safety of users or the public.
Retention and deletion
You can delete your account in the app (Settings). Deleting your account removes
your profile and content from the service, and your media files are purged from
storage. Records we need for safety or legal reasons (for example moderation reports)
may be retained for a limited period.
Your choices
- Choose the audience for every post.
- Location permission is required to capture and post — it is the core feature —
but you can revoke it in system settings at any time (capture will be
unavailable).
- Saving captures to your device's camera roll is optional (Settings → Camera).
- Notifications are optional and controlled by system permissions.
Age requirement
Witnist is for adults. You must be 18 or older to create an account, and we verify
date of birth at registration. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18;
if we learn we have, we will delete the account.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit (TLS). Passwords are hashed. Media uploads use scoped,
time-limited credentials. No system is perfectly secure, but we design for least
access.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update this page and the effective date, and note
material changes in the app.
